Ticho (21): "The work experience I gained through Temper is helping me figure out what I want later."

Ticho (21) is studying Tourism Management and started working as a FreeFlexer as soon as he turned 18. Working through Temper gives him the opportunity to gain experience in different sectors; he has already worked in waitressing, delivery and customer service, among others. This helps him to figure out what direction he wants to take after graduation.

You started Temper right at 18. Why did you want to become a FreeFlexer?

"I heard about Temper 3 months before I turned 18. And then I thought: 'that seems ideal, that freedom', because you can sign up for last-minute shifts, but you can also plan further ahead. You often don't know until late when a test or other study obligation is scheduled, so it fits in perfectly with my study schedule. But also in my social planning: if my friends want to meet up, I'll be there. If nothing is scheduled, I sign up for shifts."

What kinds of gigs do you work through Temper?

"It started mostly in the hospitality industry, then there were fewer shifts because of the corona crisis. So I also tried out logistics and delivery shifts. I also worked in customer service at Leen Bakker, where I got my first customer service work experience. Later I worked breakfast shifts at Roommate Bruno Hotel, where they then needed someone in the office for sales. That was another whole new thing that I learned a lot from. So those opportunities to try a lot of different things is what I like best. I've already worked at a lot of companies and this helps me determine the direction of what I want to do after I graduate."

Do you also see yourself freelancing after completing your studies?

"Yeah, I think you can keep that option anyway for on the side. I think after college I do want a steady base of a permanent job, but then I could still do a freelance job once in a while if I wanted to."

What tips would you give to new FreeFlexers?

"I would say make sure you have a nice and happy profile picture and an enthusiastic description of yourself. If you're negotiating on a shift, you can also add a motivation which increases the chances of success. I also hear that calling clients works well. And furthermore, your first impression is also very important. So just work hard, think along and do things before it's asked, be proactive."
