Why do I need to give my BSN?
We need your citizen service number (BSN) for both employed and freelance shifts. Here’s why.
Rest assured, your personal information, including your BSN, is securely stored and fully protected according to GDPR.
During employed shifts, Temper is your employer, which means there are a few reasons why we need your BSN.
- Employment registration: Your BSN lets us officially register you as an employee and verify your identity.
- Insurance & pension: We use your BSN to set up your insurance and pension so you’re properly covered.
- Taxes & social security: Your BSN is essential for tax filings and access to social security.

There are several situations in which invoices are issued without VAT. For example, this may apply to your first trial shift if you did not yet have a VAT ID, if the VAT is reverse-charged, or if you use the Small Businesses Scheme (KOR).
In these cases, the client is required to report these invoices in the annual Uitbetaalde Bedragen aan Derden (UBD) declaration. To identify you correctly, the Belastingdienst (Dutch Tax Administration) requires your BSN.
