12 Things you need to know before you start on Temper

1. What is Temper?

Temper is a platform that makes flexible work possible. We believe everyone deserves the freedom to choose when and where they work, so work fits around your life, not the other way around. Whether you work in employment or as a freelancer, you can easily build your own schedule by applying for shifts that suit you.

2. Do I have a contract?

Through Temper, you can choose between two types of shifts: employed shifts and freelance shifts. Read about the differences here. In short. During employed shifts, you are hired by Temper and have a temporary employment contract. For freelance shifts, you and the client both sign the assignment agreement.

3. What kinds of shifts can I find on Temper?

Through Temper, you can find shifts across a variety of industries, from hospitality and retail to catering and logistics.

4. How much work experience do I need to start?

In each shift description, you can see what experience is required. Make sure you meet these requirements before applying.

No work experience yet? No worries! There are plenty of shifts that don't require specific experience, so you can get started and build your skills.

5. I already have another job. Can I work through Temper as well?

Yes! Keep in mind, though, that if you plan to do employed shifts, you can only apply the payroll tax credit (loonheffingskorting) with one employer.

6. How do I get enough work?

On our platform, you’ll find an average of more than 15,000 new shifts every week, so there’s always something that suits you. Use the filters in the shift overview to quickly find shifts that match your preferences.

Read the description carefully. Do you meet the requirements and are you available? Then apply for the shift. The company will choose the candidate that best fits the role.

7. How can I increase my chances of being chosen?

Boost your chances by applying to several shifts at once, picking up last-minute shifts, or going for shifts with fewer applicants. If a client likes your work, you could join their flex pool, making it even more likely you’ll be chosen again.

8. Are travel expenses reimbursed?

It depends on the type of shift.

Freelance

For freelance shifts, travel, accommodation, materials, and other costs are included in your hourly rate. These are part of being self-employed. In rare cases, travel costs may be reimbursed, if so, it will be mentioned. But you can always try to negotiate a higher rate.

Employed

For employed shifts, travel expenses may be reimbursed depending on the applicable collective labor agreement (CAO).

9. When do I get paid?

It depends on the type of shift.

Employed

For employed shifts, pay slips are generated and paid every Friday. If your checkout is approved by Wednesday in the week after your shift, you’ll get paid that same Friday (so earliest de Friday in the week after your shift).

Freelance

For freelance shifts, an invoice is automatically generated once the checkout has been approved. As a freelancer, you then wait for payment from the client.

But, good news, in many cases, you can use DirectPay through Finqle. For a fee of 2.9% of the invoice amount, you will receive your payment within minutes after the checkout has been approved.

10. What if I can’t make it to a shift?

Each shift has a cancellation period during which you can cancel without any consequences. Late cancellations may have consequences.

Freelance

For freelance shifts, you can always arrange a substitute. If you can’t find a substitute and nobody ends up working the shift, the client can mark you as a no-show which lowers your show-up percentage.

Employed

For employed shifts, you can’t arrange a substitute. You can cancel the shift via the platform and explain why you have to miss it. The client may mark you as a no-show, which affects your show-up rate and could result strikes.

11. Am I insured?

Yes! You’re insured during both freelance and employed shifts.

Freelance

During freelance shifts, you’re covered through Alicia Benefits for liability, accidents, and even disability. Read here for details.

Employed

During employed shifts, you’re automatically insured through Temper for sickness, disability, and unemployment. On top of that, there’s additional coverage for liability and accidents at work during your shift.

12. What taxes do I need to deal with?

There are two types of taxes to be aware of: income tax and VAT.

Income tax applies to everyone working through Temper, and you file it every spring for the previous calendar year.

VAT applies only if you’ve done freelance shifts. In that case, you file VAT declaration quarterly.
