What are the differences between freelance shifts and employed shifts?

Do I need experience to start working via Temper?

To get started with Temper, you don’t always need experience. It depends on the company posting the shift and what they’re looking for.

You can find this information in the shift description, so make sure to read it carefully. If, upon arrival, it turns out that you do not meet the requirements, the company may refuse your shift and register you as a no-show.

Not sure if a shift is the right fit for you? You can always reach out to the company to double-check.

What certifications does Temper have for employed shifts?

During employed shifts, you are an employee of Temper. We make sure that everything is well arranged for both you and the client. These are our most important certifications:

NEN Certification

NEN (Nederlandse Norm) is the Dutch institute that sets standards for safety, quality, and compliance across industries. The 4400-1 certification by NEN ensures that we comply with the Dutch standards for employment agencies. It confirms that Temper meets legal requirements related to the hiring of staff and the correct handling of payroll, taxes, and other essential processes. Find more info on this certificate here.

SNA certification

SNA (Stichting Normering Arbeid) is an organisation that sets quality standards for the labour market. The SNA certification provides extra protection for our clients. If, for any reason, Temper makes a mistake regarding tax contributions (which is unlikely), our clients are exempt from the 'inlenersaansprakelijkheid'—the responsibility to pay any missed tax contributions. Our SNA registration gives clients peace of mind that everything is handled properly and within legal guidelines. Find our certificate below.

What types of shifts can I find through Temper?

You can find shifts across a variety of industries, including hospitality, catering, retail, and logistics. Shifts are available either through temporary employment or as a freelancer. You decide what works best for you!

We operate throughout the Netherlands. Download the app, complete your profile, and discover all available shifts in one place. Use the filters to easily see which shifts are available near you.

Can I use Temper for a short period of time?

You can use Temper whenever it works for you! Creating an account is without any commitment, and you decide when (and how often) you want to work. Great if you’re only available for a short period, for example during a study break.

Freelance

Do keep in mind that if you want to do freelance shifts but you don’t have a VAT number yet, you can only work one freelance shift before needing to apply for one. You request this from the Tax Authorities, and it can take a few weeks before you have your VAT ID.

I’m already employed. Can I also work through Temper?

You can work both employed and freelance shifts, also when you’re already employed elsewhere. There are two things to keep in mind:

Payroll tax credit for employed shifts

During your employed shifts you’re temporarily employed by Temper, but keep in mind that you can only apply the payroll tax credit with one employer. It’s best to apply the payroll tax credit with the employer where you earn the most.

Income tax

If your gross income increases, for example because you work a lot, part of your income could be taxed in a higher tax bracket. Check the Belastingdienst article on rates and tax brackets for more information.

Can I apply for both freelance and employed shifts?

Yes you can! At Temper, you can work both freelance and employed shifts. For freelance shifts, you’ll need to register as a freelancer and get a VAT ID to continue after your first shift.

But there are a few other differences between freelance and employed shifts. Make sure you know what they are.

What are my responsibilities as a worker?

Being a flex worker means you choose where and when you work. That’s awesome freedom, but it also comes with some responsibilities.

We’ve put together the most important ones so you know exactly what’s expected.

Keep an eye on your applications

Before you sign up for a shift, read the description carefully and make sure you tick the boxes for skills and experience. Also, show up dressed appropriately.

Watch your applications! As long as they’re open, you could still get accepted. Can’t make it after all? Withdraw your application in time so you don’t get scheduled last-minute.

Be professional on your shift

Being on time matters! It shows you’re reliable and that you respect the team. If you can, try to get there a bit early.

The more you rock during your shift and the happier the company is with your work, the more likely you are to get a good rating. This also boosts your chances of getting chosen for future shifts.

Stay safe and healthy

Your health comes first. Follow the safety rules at work and take care of yourself during your shifts. Do you fall ill during your employed shift? Contact us as soon as possible.

Cancel on time

Can’t work a shift? You can cancel freely until the cancellation term expires. After that, cancelling has consequences for your account.

For freelance shifts, you can find a substitute to cover for you. Employed shifts? You can only cancel through the platform.

Understand how things work

Before signing up, make sure you know how the platform works: cancellation rules, payments, insurance, and what’s expected from you. Did you know that freelancers, for example, take on credit risk. But you can also choose to use DirectPay as payment method. And that employed shifts follow labor laws about how often you can work. Reading up saves surprises later.

Taxes

You’re responsible for filing your annual income tax in May. Freelancers also need to do a quarterly VAT declaration (unless you use the small business scheme, KOR).

Which trade association is Temper linked with for employed shifts?

Temper is affiliated with the NBBU (Nederlandse Bond van Bemiddelings- en Uitzendondernemingen) because we not only have freelance shifts on the platform but also employed shifts. During employed shifts, you are employed by us as a flex worker.

What is NBBU?

The NBBU is a Dutch trade association for staffing agencies. They set agreements on fair working conditions and help ensure that both agency workers and hiring companies know what to expect.

Impact on you

  • You are guaranteed fair treatment and adherence to labour laws.
  • Your labour agreement follows NBBU guidelines, ensuring clear and fair terms.
  • You have access to support and resources in case of disputes or issues at work.

For more information about NBBU, visit their website: NBBU

Who is my employer?

Check the shift you want to apply for. If it’s a freelance shift, you’ll be working as a freelancer and won’t be employed by Temper or the company you work for. In that case, you don’t have an employer, but you are your own boss.

During your employed shift, you are contracted by Temper. This means that your employment relationship is with MQ Temper B.V. and the companies you work for are considered the hirers, or ‘inleners’ in Dutch.

For each employed shift you work, you’ll have a separate labour contract.

What is the role of the company where the shift takes place?

This depends on the type of shift.

What do I need to get started?

As soon as you sign up for your first shift, you will be directed to the ID verification process. To complete your registration, you must first upload a valid form of identification.

On the platform, you will find two types of shifts: employed shifts and freelance shifts. Depending on the type of shift you apply for, there may be a few things you need to sort out before you can get started.

12 Things you need to know before you start on Temper

1. What is Temper?

Temper is a platform that makes flexible work possible. We believe everyone deserves the freedom to choose when and where they work, so work fits around your life, not the other way around. Whether you work in employment or as a freelancer, you can easily build your own schedule by applying for shifts that suit you.

2. Do I have a contract?

Through Temper, you can choose between two types of shifts: employed shifts and freelance shifts. Read about the differences here. In short. During employed shifts, you are hired by Temper and have a temporary employment contract. For freelance shifts, you and the client both sign the assignment agreement.

3. What kinds of shifts can I find on Temper?

Through Temper, you can find shifts across a variety of industries, from hospitality and retail to catering and logistics.

4. How much work experience do I need to start?

In each shift description, you can see what experience is required. Make sure you meet these requirements before applying.

No work experience yet? No worries! There are plenty of shifts that don't require specific experience, so you can get started and build your skills.

5. I already have another job. Can I work through Temper as well?

Yes! Keep in mind, though, that if you plan to do employed shifts, you can only apply the payroll tax credit (loonheffingskorting) with one employer.

6. How do I get enough work?

On our platform, you’ll find an average of more than 15,000 new shifts every week, so there’s always something that suits you. Use the filters in the shift overview to quickly find shifts that match your preferences.

Read the description carefully. Do you meet the requirements and are you available? Then apply for the shift. The company will choose the candidate that best fits the role.

7. How can I increase my chances of being chosen?

Boost your chances by applying to several shifts at once, picking up last-minute shifts, or going for shifts with fewer applicants. If a client likes your work, you could join their flex pool, making it even more likely you’ll be chosen again.

8. Are travel expenses reimbursed?

It depends on the type of shift.

Freelance

For freelance shifts, travel, accommodation, materials, and other costs are included in your hourly rate. These are part of being self-employed. In rare cases, travel costs may be reimbursed, if so, it will be mentioned. But you can always try to negotiate a higher rate.

Employed

For employed shifts, travel expenses may be reimbursed depending on the applicable collective labor agreement (CAO).

9. When do I get paid?

It depends on the type of shift.

Employed

For employed shifts, pay slips are generated and paid every Friday. If your checkout is approved by Wednesday in the week after your shift, you’ll get paid that same Friday (so earliest de Friday in the week after your shift).

Freelance

For freelance shifts, an invoice is automatically generated once the checkout has been approved. As a freelancer, you then wait for payment from the client.

But, good news, in many cases, you can use DirectPay through Finqle. For a fee of 2.9% of the invoice amount, you will receive your payment within minutes after the checkout has been approved.

10. What if I can’t make it to a shift?

Each shift has a cancellation period during which you can cancel without any consequences. Late cancellations may have consequences.

Freelance

For freelance shifts, you can always arrange a substitute. If you can’t find a substitute and nobody ends up working the shift, the client can mark you as a no-show which lowers your show-up percentage.

Employed

For employed shifts, you can’t arrange a substitute. You can cancel the shift via the platform and explain why you have to miss it. The client may mark you as a no-show, which affects your show-up rate and could result strikes.

11. Am I insured?

Yes! You’re insured during both freelance and employed shifts.

Freelance

During freelance shifts, you’re covered through Alicia Benefits for liability, accidents, and even disability. Read here for details.

Employed

During employed shifts, you’re automatically insured through Temper for sickness, disability, and unemployment. On top of that, there’s additional coverage for liability and accidents at work during your shift.

12. What taxes do I need to deal with?

There are two types of taxes to be aware of: income tax and VAT.

Income tax applies to everyone working through Temper, and you file it every spring for the previous calendar year.

VAT applies only if you’ve done freelance shifts. In that case, you file VAT declaration quarterly.
