Am I entitled to holiday pay and vacation days?

Everyone needs a break from time to time! Luckily, Temper offers complete flexibility. You schedule your own shifts, work whenever it suits you, and take time off whenever you want. You’re not tied to anything, except, of course, the shifts you’ve already signed up for.

But how does it work with holiday pay and vacation days? That depends on the type of shift you do.

I'm sick. Am I insured of income?

Being sick is never pleasant, especially when you can’t work but your fixed expenses continue. If you’re unable to work due to illness (temporarily or longer), it’s understandable that you want to know what applies to you financially. This depends on the shifttype.

What certifications does Temper have for employed shifts?

During employed shifts, you are an employee of Temper. We make sure that everything is well arranged for both you and the client. These are our most important certifications:

NEN Certification

NEN (Nederlandse Norm) is the Dutch institute that sets standards for safety, quality, and compliance across industries. The 4400-1 certification by NEN ensures that we comply with the Dutch standards for employment agencies. It confirms that Temper meets legal requirements related to the hiring of staff and the correct handling of payroll, taxes, and other essential processes. Find more info on this certificate here.

SNA certification

SNA (Stichting Normering Arbeid) is an organisation that sets quality standards for the labour market. The SNA certification provides extra protection for our clients. If, for any reason, Temper makes a mistake regarding tax contributions (which is unlikely), our clients are exempt from the 'inlenersaansprakelijkheid'—the responsibility to pay any missed tax contributions. Our SNA registration gives clients peace of mind that everything is handled properly and within legal guidelines. Find our certificate below.

What is the assignment agreement for freelance shifts?

For every freelance shift you are accepted for, an assignment agreement is created. The agreement is signed by both you and the client and contains all the terms and conditions for that shift. It protects both parties and ensures clear expectations.

Temper is not a party to this agreement; it is a direct agreement between you and the client.

How does signing work?

Because you have already accepted Temper's Terms of Use, the assignment agreement is automatically created and signed when you apply for a shift. Once the client accepts your application, the agreement becomes legally binding.

Where can I find the assignment agreement?

You can download the assignment agreement from the shift page of your accepted freelance shift.

What does this mean for you?

By applying for a shift, you agree to all the terms of that shift, including the working hours, hourly rate, tasks, cancellation policy, and required skills. If either party does not meet these terms, the agreement may be terminated and there may be consequences.

For example:

  • If you do not meet the shift requirements (for example, by wearing the wrong clothing), the client may mark you as a no-show.
  • On the other hand, if you arrive for your shift but the location is closed, you may be entitled to submit a claim.

What types of shifts can I find through Temper?

You can find shifts across a variety of industries, including hospitality, catering, retail, and logistics. Shifts are available either through temporary employment or as a freelancer. You decide what works best for you!

We operate throughout the Netherlands. Download the app, complete your profile, and discover all available shifts in one place. Use the filters to easily see which shifts are available near you.

Can I arrange a substitute from outside the platform for my freelance shift?

You can arrange a substitute for a freelance shift outside the platform. Just keep in mind that you remain responsible for the shift, even if someone else works it.

What should you keep in mind?

1. Your substitute must be able to do the shift independently

Make sure they have the right skills and experience to carry out the shift properly.

2. Your substitute must be allowed to work in the Netherlands

A Dutch or European ID card or passport, or a valid residence permit stating. If your substitute isn't allowed to work in the Netherlands, the client may send them home. In that case, you can receive a no-show, and compensation may be requested.

3. Your substitute must be a freelancer

Your substitute invoices you, so they need to be registered as a freelancer and have a valid VAT ID.

4. Check the shift requirements

Some clients have extra requirements, such as liability insurance. If your substitute doesn't meet these requirements, the client can refuse them.

You're still responsible

If you arrange a substitute, it's up to you to:

  • Let the client know who will be taking over the shift.
  • Check that your substitute is allowed to work in the Netherlands.
  • Check out after the shift.
  • Receive the review.
  • Make sure your substitute gets paid.
  • Make clear agreements about attendance, liability, and any costs.

If your substitute doesn't show up or gets sent home, you'll receive the no-show because the shift remains your responsibility.

In short: if you arrange a substitute yourself, you also take on the responsibility and the risk.

How do I add my VAT ID to my profile?

You can easily add your VAT ID to your profile. Follow these steps:

  1. Profile
  2. Account
  3. Payment details - click edit
  4. Add your VAT ID and invoice address and save them!

Don’t forget to add your invoice address, this has to match your registration with the Belastingdienst (Tax Administration) otherwise we can’t verify your VAT ID.

Income tax return for freelance shifts

During the annual income tax filing period (March 1 to May 1), you report your income over the previous year. As a freelancer, you need to calculate your income yourself. The amount you owe can add up quickly, so keep your records organized and set aside money each month.

Calculate your profit

  1. Calculate your income
  2. Add up your business expenses

3. Calculate your profit

4. Possible deductions

Declaration

Whether you report your income as winst uit onderneming (profit from business) of resultaat uit overige werkzaamheden (income from other activities) depends on your personal situation. Read more on this on the Belastingdienst website.

Zvw Contribution

On top of your health insurance premium, you also pay an income-based Zvw contribution in the Netherlands. If you’re employed, your employer deducts it automatically, but as a freelancer, you pay it yourself. The tax authorities calculate the amount for you. For 2025, the contribution is 5.26%.

If it still feels confusing, don’t worry, you’re definitely not alone. And if needed, you can always hire an accountant to guide you through it.

When will my checkout be approved?

After you submit your hours, the client has 7 days to approve the checkout. If this period expires, our system will automatically process your checkout on the eighth day. In that case, you will not receive a rating, but the payment process will start.

Counter-proposal

It can happen that the company doesn’t agree with the hours you submitted. If that’s the case, they can then make a counter-proposal. You can accept this, or you can make another counter-proposal yourself. Both of you have the option to add a message to explain to each other why you are suggesting the new hours.

Employed shift exceptions

For some employee shifts, you cannot complete the checkout yourself. In these cases, the company reports your worked hours to us, and we make sure they are processed correctly. The timeframe in which a checkout can be approved may also vary for these shifts. You can find more information about this in the shift description.

If, after receiving your payment and payslip, you believe something is incorrect, you can always contact the company to discuss it.

Do I have a contract with Temper?

You can find two types of shifts on our platform: employed shifts and freelance shifts.

Why can’t I apply for a substitute shift?

You can only take over another flex worker’s freelance shift if you both have the same VAT setup. That’s because, as a substitute, you’ll invoice the original flex worker, who invoices the client.

If invoicing goes through Finqle, the total amount must stay the same for the substitute. So if the original flex worker doesn’t charge VAT, but you do, the totals won’t match, meaning you won’t be able to take over the shift.

Invoicing without VAT

Flex workers who use the KOR scheme, or who are new to the platform and want to try out a freelance shift before applying for a VAT ID, don’t charge VAT.

They can cover shifts for each other, but they can’t substitute for flex workers who do charge VAT.

Important: Don’t just switch the KOR setting on or off in your profile to make a substitution work. This isn’t allowed by the Belastingdienst (Tax Administration) and could lead to a fine.

I am sick. What should I do?

Feeling sick and can’t make it to your upcoming shift? That’s really unfortunate, we hope you recover quickly.

If you’re still within the cancellation window, you can always cancel your shift without any problem.

But if that window has already passed, it’s important to take action as soon as possible. What you do next depends on the type of shift you have scheduled: employed or freelance.
