Which taxes do I need to deal with when working via Temper?

The taxes you need to pay depend on the type of shift you work: employed or freelance. There are two types of taxes you may need to deal with.

Income tax

Income tax applies to both employed and freelance shifts. You file your income tax return once a year.

  • Employed shift: Temper withholds and pays your income tax on your behalf. Use your annual statement from your financial overview when filing your tax return.
  • Freelance shift: You are responsible for paying your own income tax. It's a good idea to set aside part of your earnings throughout the year so you're prepared when it's time to file.

VAT return

VAT returns only apply to freelance shifts, unless you are enrolled in the Small Businesses Scheme (KOR). If you use the KOR, you do not need to file VAT returns.

VAT returns are filed every quarter. The deadlines are:

  • 30 April
  • 31 July
  • 31 October
  • 31 January

Tipdownload the app Btw-Alert offered by the Belastingdienst and always receive a reminder when you have to declare your VAT.

When will my invoice be sent to the client?

When you use Finqle’s invoicing services for your freelance shifts, our system automatically generates a sales invoice in your name as soon as you and the client have finalized the checkout. This invoice is based on the checkout details and the agreements you made with the client in the assignment agreement.

Collective invoice

Your sales invoice is included in a collective invoice that Finqle sends to the client every Monday and Thursday, together with invoices from other freelancers. You can find the collective invoice number on your sales invoice.

The collective invoice is also available in the client's financial overview, where they can view and pay all outstanding invoices.

How to arrange a substitute for your freelance shift

Can’t make it to a freelance shift and the cancellation deadline has passed? No worries, you can find a substitute to avoid a no-show and any other potential consequences.

Find a substitute

  1. Go to the shift in your dashboard.
  2. Look for the ‘request substitute’ button. If you see ‘cancel my shift’ instead, it means the cancellation deadline hasn’t passed yet, so you can still cancel the shift without any issues.
  3. On the next page, scroll to the bottom and click ‘find a substitute.’ This will open the substitute page, where you can manage your substitute request.
  4. Tip: Share the link from the substitute page in the Temper Discord Community to promote the shift and get more attention from other workers.

Responsibility

The shift is still your responsibility until you’ve arranged a suitable substitute, so keep an eye on the substitute page. When applications come in, take a look at the profiles and pick someone who meets the shift requirements.

Check their on-time and attendance rates, and only accept someone you trust to do the job properly, how they perform will show up on your account.

Ratings

Future clients can see how often you’ve requested substitutes and their average rating. Along with your show-up and on-time rates, they’ll also see your substitute percentage. Don’t worry, this is a separate metric and won’t affect your personal average rating.

Can I use my VAT ID to work outside of Temper?

Absolutely! Your VAT ID is your personal number and isn’t tied to our platform. So even if you applied for your VAT ID through us, you can use the same number for freelance jobs outside the platform.

Business registration

Just make sure your business description stays up to date. Planning to work in a new field, like hospitality? Make sure to notify the Belastingdienst (Tax Administration) and, if necessary, the Kamer van Koophandel (Chamber of Commerce). You can find more information on the website of the Belastingdienst. Their website is available in Dutch, you can use a translation tool to translate it.

I received a different amount than expected for my employed shift.

Did you expect a different amount than what you received for your employed shift? There are three common reasons. Download your payslip to see exactly what caused the difference.

The amount on my payslip matches what I received, but I expected something else

  • How your pay goes from gross to net

The shift page shows an calculation of your hourly wage, but the final payment can be slightly different. The amount listed is gross and doesn’t take into account individual tax deductions or extra allowances, like travel reimbursement. Your final payment reflects these adjustments.

Did you know you may be eligible for payroll tax credit? It reduces the amount of tax withheld from your wages, so you take home more net pay.

Read more about how your salary is calculated here.

I received more/less than what’s on my payslip

  • You were paid for a shift from a different week

If your payslip doesn’t match the amount that you’ve received in your account, it might be because a shift from another week was paid out. If a checkout wasn’t accepted on time, the shift is paid a week later, but will still appear on the payslip of the week in which it took place.

So if you received more than what’s on your current payslip, download your older payslips to see the difference. You’ll see a correction page showing the updated payment date.

  • A pay correction was made

If a correction was needed for a previous payslip, like if hours were recorded too high or too low, it might be adjusted in this week’s payment.

Check your older payslips to see if a correction was made. You’ll recognize it by an extra page added to the payslip, showing the adjustment, the amount, and the date it was paid or deducted. This date matches the day you received a different amount than expected.

Why am I not being chosen for a shift?

Not chosen for a shift? Bummer, but don’t worry! It’s usually nothing personal. Since the company posting the shift makes the choice themselves, we can never say exactly why someone is chosen or not.

Possible reasons

  • Another flex worker who applied has already worked with this company before or is part of their flexpool.
  • There were many applications, and they eventually had to make a choice.
  • The shift was no longer needed.

Boost our chances

You can boost your chances of being chosen by creating an attractive profile that reflects who you are and what you can do!

Avoid last-minute acceptance

And don’t forget to keep an eye on your open applications and withdraw them if you no longer want to wait. This way, you avoid being accepted last-minute when you’re no longer available. As this may have consequences.

Do I earn more for an employed shift or freelance shift?

Whether you end up earning more with employed or freelance shifts depends on the specific shift and your personal situation. Make sure you understand what each model involves, what additional costs may apply, and which guarantees you have.

Guarantees

For employed shifts, you will receive guaranteed payments on a set weekly schedule. For freelance shifts, the timing of your payment depends on your client, unless you’ve chosen DirectPay.

Gross to net

In general, you often earn slightly more gross with freelance shifts. But, keep in mind that for employed shifts, part of your pay is already withheld for things like insurance, pension, and taxes. For freelance shifts, you are responsible for setting aside a portion of your earnings for taxes, insurance, and savings for retirement.

My shift/application was cancelled. Why?

Shifts can get canceled by Temper or the company for different reasons. Here are the most common reasons for each type of shift.

VAT return: How do I calculate what I need to declare?

It’s actually pretty simple: the Belastingdienst (Tax Administration) want to know how much you earned as a freelancer and how much VAT you collected on those earnings. You can then deduct the VAT you've already paid on your business expenses (incoming invoices).

Step 1: Download your invoices

Download all available invoices from your Financial overview that fall within the quarter you're filing for. Invoices must be included in your VAT return even if you haven't received payment for them yet. The Belastingdienst uses the invoice date, not the payment date.

Go to Financial Overview → Invoices and download both your:

Step 2: Calculate your income and collected VAT

You need to know:

  • Your total income excluding VAT
  • The total VAT you've received

Gather all your sales invoices (M). If VAT was charged on an invoice, you'll include it in your VAT return. Some invoices may show 0% VAT or reverse-charged VAT. These invoices should also be included in your VAT return, but declared separately in rubriek 1e.

For each invoice, note down:

  • The amount excluding VAT (grondslag on invoice)
  • The VAT amount

Substitution invoices: Make sure to include invoices for substitution shifts. If someone covered a shift for you through a substitution, you'll see two invoices in your Financial Overview:

  • An invoice from you to the client (this counts as income and should be included in Step 2)
  • An invoice from the substitute to you (this counts as an expense and should be included in Step 3)

Step 3: Calculate your expenses and paid VAT

You now need to know:

  • Your total expenses excluding VAT
  • The VAT you've paid on those expenses

Gather all your invoices from other flex workers for substitution shifts and purchase invoices (costs for DirectPay).

For each invoice, note down:

  • The amount excluding VAT (grondslag on invoice)
  • The VAT amount

Add everything together to calculate your total expenses excluding VAT and total expenses including VAT.

Step 4: Submit your VAT return

Once you've collected all the necessary amounts, you're ready to submit your VAT return. Follow the VAT return instructions provided by the Belastingdienst.

According to the platform, I have been paid but I haven’t received anything.

If the platform shows you’ve been paid but the money hasn’t hit your account yet, it might just take an extra day for the bank to process it. Keep in mind that banks don’t process payments over the weekend.

We usually recommend waiting at least two days.

Check your details

Please check your profile to make sure your IBAN is correct.

Freelance shifts

Freelance payments are processed through Finqle. Have you recently updated your IBAN with us? If so, you should have received an email from Finqle. You need to confirm your new details through that email before payments will go to your new account.

Download the transaction statement from your financial overview and check which bank account the payment was sent to.

Is your IBAN incorrect, or have you not received your payment within 2 days? Please contact support.

Can I apply for multiple shifts that take place at the same time?

It’s smart to apply for multiple shifts. That way, you increase your chances of being chosen. No worries, if you get accepted for a shift while you still have other applications for the same date and time, your overlapping shifts are automatically cancelled.

Shifts applications that do not overlap

You can still be accepted for shifts that don’t overlap. To avoid being accepted for two shifts on the same day, it’s important that you cancel your other applications yourself.

For shifts at different companies, there must always be at least 59 minutes in between, giving you enough time to get to your next shift.

Working employed shifts with a phase B contract.

When you move to a phase B contract, you still work per shift just like before. The main difference is the type of employment contract underneath: in phase B, your contract runs for a longer period and includes a minimum number of hours. Below you’ll find all key questions and answers in one place.

What is a phase B contract?

A phase B contract is a fixed-term employment contract that runs for a longer period while you continue working per shift. There is no agency clause (uitzendbeding) that ends the contract early. A phase B contract simply adds more stability.

How long does my contract last?

Your contract no longer covers just one shift at a time. It runs for a fixed period. The exact duration is written in your contract. Unlike in phase A, the contract does not automatically end after each shift. It continues for the full agreed period and ends on the end date in your contract.

How do I become eligible for a phase B contract?

You can be invited when there is a good likelihood of ongoing work, when your performance is reliable, and when you have completed 52 worked weeks in phase A. If there is a 6-month break without any contracts, the counter resets.

How many hours will I work each week?

Your contract includes a minimum number of hours you are expected to work. The actual hours you work can vary from week to week, and it is completely fine to work more than the minimum.

For how many hours will I be paid?

You’re paid for the hours you work. If you don’t meet the minimum because you didn’t pick up available shifts, those hours aren’t paid.

Do I still need to apply for shifts?

Yes. You keep applying as usual for shifts in the app. You are expected to apply for at least the minimum hours stated in your contract. The minimum hours only apply if you actually apply for available and suitable shifts.

What happens when I get sick?

You are covered under our sickness policy. While you’re sick, you cannot pick up new shifts until you report that you’ve recovered. Please report sick to Support as soon as possible so we can guide you through the steps.

Can I cancel a shift?

Yes, you can still cancel a shift. Please make sure to do so as early as possible, so the client still has time to find someone else. Keep in mind that you remain responsible for picking up enough shifts over a longer period to meet your minimum hours.

Can I take holidays?

Yes. You can choose not to work for a certain period. If you take time off, just make sure you still pick enough shifts in the longer period to reach your minimum hours. You continue to accrue holiday hours and these are paid out directly.

Can the contract be terminated early?

The contract normally can’t be ended early. If you stop picking up shifts, it simply continues, but you won’t be paid for hours you don’t work. Temper can only end the contract early in exceptional situations.

What happens at the end of my contract?

When the contract ends, both you and Temper can decide whether you want to continue with a new contract.

What are the employment terms and conditions in phase B?

They are generally the same as in phase A. This includes your pay, holiday pay, travel allowance and pension build-up, all following Dutch employment rules and the applicable CAO.

What are my responsibilities?

Your responsibilities remain similar to what you are used to. You apply for your shifts, show up reliably, keep good communication with the companies, and inform support quickly if you become sick or if something changes. You are also responsible for meeting the minimum hours agreed in your contract over a longer period.
